Preface
- Last weeks crash of the wiki was caused by a operating system update )-:
- While repairing the system we updated the wiki. Hence a new look and feel (which is still unfamiliar to me).
Accessing the wiki
The URL is http://decodingthedisciplines.de. We will switch to https in the course of 2025.
Anybody can read. Only signed up users can contribute. Only users classified as "researchers" can access restricted materials.
Quick tour of the wiki
If you are new to the wiki take a couple of minutes and browse around.
Currently the following types of pages are in use:
- regular content pages such as Step 1 - Identify a Bottleneck to Learning. Most of them present a piece of literature such as How Many Sources Do I Need?
- category pages such as Category:Mathematics currently only used for classifying literature (starting with "Category:" Note there is no blank behind the colon.)
- user pages such as User:Tblotevogel (starting with "Category:" Note there is no blank behind the colon.)
- material pages (technically File:) such as File:Limits-transcripts-part1.rtf. You might not have access to this if access requires researcher-privileges.
Creating User Accounts
- The wiki server is currently not configured to send emails (default security setting). Therefore I will create user accounts by hand.
- Please write your name, email adress and desired user name in the chat.
Editing pages
- There a two way to edit: visual editing and source editing. I recommend to use the first one.
- For some technical pages (e.g. Templates) only the latter is available.
- It is good practice on wikis to summarize edits shortly (e.g. "init", "typo", "+ section on Creating pages", "- first paragraph", "saving work").
- Click on "This is a minor edit" if you did not change content substantially.
Creating pages
- I will showcase this for a literature page.
- Neumann, Friederike, “How does a Historian Read a Scholarly Text and How Do Students Learn to Do the Same,” in David Ludvigsson and Alan Booth, Enriching History Teaching and Learning: Challenges, Possibilities, Practice (Linköping Sweden: Linköping University, 2015), pp. 67-83. (The full text of this volume may be found at http://liu.diva-portal.org/smash/get/diva2:786270/FULLTEXT01.pdf)
Things you might want to do to familiarize yourself with the wiki
Pair up in groups and pick a task.If you find the page blocked by someone else pick another task.
Content pages
- Review Emotional Bottleneck and add content if needed. (e.g giving an example seems to be appropriate)
- Review Bottleneck and add content if needed (e.g giving an example seems to be appropriate)
- Browse the wiki and add missing pages to Pages needed.
- In Name suggest a name for a formal Decoding community.
- Add information in Events about the next SIG meeting (Miriam? David?)
Literature and References
- Complete the reference to Easton & Middendorf under "See also" on the Disrupting page.
- Create a page for this reference using the PublishedWork-Template. See How to decode student bottlenecks to learning in computer science as an example.
- Analogously to task 2: Add any item listed under Decoding History on the Decoding webpage using the PublishedWork-Template. Before doing so, make sure that this wiki does not already contain this item by using "Find ..." on top of the wiki page.
- Link the literature stated under References on Decoding the Disciplines to their corresponding wiki pages. Hint: A good way to edit references is by clicking on the corresponding footnote rather than on the text within in the footnote (see figure).
