A bottleneck is a concept, task or line of thought where students frequently get stuck in their learning. Decoding the Disciplines investigates how experts are able to pass disciplinary bottlenecks. Identification of bottlenecks is the first step in the Decoding process.
Metaphorical meaning
Like the term “threshold concept,” the term “bottleneck” also refers to obstacles in the learning process that are characterized by students' difficulties in mastering certain aspects of learning. The term can also be thought of as the bottleneck separating the small group of students who will excel (in the neck of the bottle) from the rest (in the bottle).[1]
